1. How does the viscosity of the fluid affect the Gear Oil Pump?

Unlike centrifugal pumps, a Gear Oil Pump actually becomes more efficient as the fluid gets thicker because the high viscosity seals the internal clearances between the gears, reducing volumetric “slip.”

No, a standard Gear Oil Pump is strictly designed for clean, lubricating fluids. Abrasive grit or hard solids will quickly score the tight clearances between the gear teeth and the casing, destroying the pump’s efficiency.

An external Gear Oil Pump uses two identical, interlocking gears side-by-side, which is excellent for high pressure. An internal gear pump uses a smaller gear rotating inside a larger outer ring gear, which is typically better for extremely shear-sensitive or ultra-high viscosity fluids similar to a rotor pump.

Because the Gear Oil Pump provides positive displacement, it will continue to build pressure if the discharge line is closed, eventually rupturing the pipe or burning out the motor. The relief valve safely recirculates the oil internally if pressure exceeds the safety limit.
